The student-led and student-run University Center Program Council (UCPC) has prepared a semester full of music, food, fun and more. All UTSA students are invited out to join in the fun that takes place Wednesdays-Saturdays in the University Center all semester long. There is always something to do in the UC!
“All of our great UCPC activities are funded by the University Center fee every UTSA student pays” said UCPC President Alice Oseni, a senior studying international business. “Our activities offer a place for fun with on-campus convenience. Everyone should come on out and enjoy.”
UCinema Nights is the UCPC’s most popular activity and feature free screenings of blockbuster favorites before they come out on DVD. Popular films such as Thor, Bridesmaids, The Avengers and more are screened Thursdays at noon on the Downtown Campus, and on Fridays at 9 p.m. and Saturdays at 7 p.m. on the Main Campus. Free hot and fresh popcorn is also provided.
Can’t wait for Friday? Be sure to attend UCPC’s Coffeehouse. This series of events features live entertainment every Wednesday night at 8 p.m. Performers and style of performance vary from week to week and include acoustic singer/songwriters, local bands, and poetry jams with nationally acclaimed spoken word artists. Do you want to be the performer? Then come and sign up to express yourself in a Coffeehouse Open Mic night when you can sign up for your own 5 minutes of fame.
Thursdays and Saturdays are filled with a variety of large-scale programs that range from casino night, late night barbecues, hypnotist acts, comedy shows, magicians and parties with a carnival-type atmosphere.
“There really is something for everyone,” Oseni said.
The fun doesn’t have to end with just attending the activities, as a student-run organization, any student can join the UCPC and help to plan these events—gaining leadership and event management skills and behind-the-scenes entertainment experience.
“UCPC is the best program board around! It’s given me opportunities to travel, develop leadership skills and gain lifelong friends. Fun begins with us,” said Carrie Carlon, UCPC vice president for recruitment and retention.
Any interested UTSA student is invited to attend a pizza party and interest meeting on Friday, September 7, 2012 at 5 p.m. in the UC South-Travis Room (UC 2.202). Members and advisers will be on hand to answer questions.
